One hundred thousand miles gets you pretty far.

Our five-year old Civic reached 100,000 miles tonight, as we drove home from watching Forks Over Knives.

  • One hundred thousand miles.
  • Houston to Saint Louis.
  • Saint Louis to Dallas.
  • Dallas to Oklahoma City.
  • Oklahoma City to Saint Louis.
  • Saint Louis to Portland.

Each mile, literally and metaphorically, represents movement.  And more metaphorically: change, growth, hopefully maturity, and definitely increasing experience. It was this kind of movement that, before even watching the movie, sparked my interest in veganism (I hate it when spellchecker says something I write is not a word!).  If you know Isaac and me you probably think that Isaac finally got to me and pushed me to the loony side of hippie. But to get the story right, hear this: A week or so ago Isaac wanted to start feeding Sofia some beef (pasture raised and finished, of course).  I resisted, assuring him that she could easily go her first whole year without trying meat and she would be just fine. And it was two of my girlfriends that, through their amazing stories, planted the seed of... well... a whole food plant based diet (Get it? Seed. Plant. Ha!).  Of course, though it was my idea, as soon as I mentioned it to Isaac, he ran with it.  He went grocery shopping for the first time in months and even cooked some pretty good stuff.

He scares me a little because we do things completely differently. He gets super intense and excited, almost obsessing over new adventures.  I like to ease my way into things and stay fairly uncommitted until I'm sure it won't upset my life too much. So we'll see. This movie really pushed us over the edge.  What started out as a month trial might stretch us (in many ways) indefinitely.

If you haven't seen this movie, please, please please, go watch it. Even if you're the biggest skeptic, which means you're probably a member of my family, just take two hours of your life to make me smile.

Before ending this post, hopefully the first of many during this adventure, I'd like to thank Megan & Courtney, who are passionate about food, without making me feel guilty because I eat differently.
